Anyone have one?

I was shopping for a Blu-Ray player this weekend and ended up buying one. I didn't bu any games, which made the checkout guy look at me odd. However, from what I've heard everyone seems to think the PS3 is the best deal when considering Blu-Ray players.

It's not that I -won't- play games on it, it is just not my primary focus.

The overheat thing has me concerned though. May go back and purchase the 2 year warranty - which covers the overheat thing. This would put the price at +60 and I need a remote +$20 and I had to but an HDMI cable +$60 so $540+ for a Blu-Ray player that also acts as a gaming station - which I will play, just not that much.

Worth it i the end? I can take it back after 30 days so I can replace it with a standard Blu-ray player if needed.

I am very pleased with my PS3. Back home I have one of the original ridiculously expensive Blu-Ray players. So when my PS3 was at the house, I did not use it as a DVD player. However here in Djibouti I use my PS3 as a DVD player, as well as minor gamming platform. It works great for me in that regard. I read where many people like how the PS3 is also a great media center for pics and video. I can’t talk to that, because back home I used a notebook as a media center and did not use the PS3 for that role.

Overheating: It feels hot, but I have experienced no problems. Where I am at the temperature is 110 degrees, pounds of dust work its way into my room every week, but the PS3 is still rocking on. I see that they sell cooling fans hook on to the system, but I have never tried them.

I am very excited about the fact that newer games are coming out, and the PS3 is turning out to be the better performing platform.

BTW you don’t need a remote. The controller will work... unless you don’t like the feel of a controller for remote functions.

thanks. I may keep it then. I played a movie on it lastnight and it did seem to function just the way it should. I also like how you can update the firmware via wireless.

I have a $20 reward zone thing from Best Buy so I may use that to buy a remote. The controller may work but I don't really like it. May also just see if one of my thousand other remotes will drive the PS3 universally.

I'm in the middle of building my HD system. The PS3 may become a center piece. I'll post pics in a bit. Off to the store to buy paint. :)

I think one of your other remotes would have to be Bluetooth in order to work with PS3... Which probably means you got to buy the PS3 one.

Recommendation for games for PS3:

GTA4
Heavenly Sword (if you like hack and slash games, short game, but fun gameplay)
Anything Final Fantasy... if you got the version backwards compatable with PS/PS2, start at 10 and keep going
Prolly Call of Duty 4, so you can play with the other nutjobs in Avain.

Alrighty, well.. just my opinion, games i would purchase if i ever got a console.

FYI, most of us nutjobs have 360's.

So I picked up CoD4 on Sunday. I have only played a little bit of it, but wow, what a great game. The story alone is fantastic.

Playing it on HD w/ 5.1 Bose surround is just incredible. I pretty much suck at FPS so I'm playing on the easiest level - my aiming sucks - but I'm still enjoying the game. The story is good, but I do have a question.

Slight spoiler:
I thought I killed Al'Asad with my sniper rifle. Why am I now hunting down his son so that I can find Al'Asad? What did I miss?

When fighting, pop in and out of aim (one of the triggers). Each time you pop back into aim your site will be targeting someone. I did not catch that hint the first time they explained it. It helps greatly.

Been a while since I completed the single player, but I think the flashback wasn't the actual event but how it was supposed to go. I think they actually failed the first time around. /shrug

Actually, I think you end up missing and tear off his arm. Though ti doesn't look that way in the game and a miss is still a bad thing, but head-shot or body-shot, you still hit his arm.

that sounds about right. They did say 'wow I think I saw his arm fly off'. They could have done a better job in the second scene explaining that.

Then again, if -that- is what I'm choosing to nit-pick then this really must be a very solid game.

I know I've mentioned it already but playing this with 5.1 surround system is freaking awesome!
