Less than two weeks away. Who else with a 360 is with me in buying this sucker opening day and hooking up for some multiplayer goodness. If you have been under a rock and missed reviews of this upcoming title, go check out IGN.com as they have a nice launch centre with links to all sorts of previews. I can't to take out Talon and Madson with an uzi drive-by style, on my suped up motorcycle. ![]() |

I am actually switching firms in the near future, with May 2 being my last day of work for 2-3 weeks. Hope to get a lot of gaming in during that time period, and GTA IV stands to be at the top of that playtime list. |

I'm thinking about picking it up, but we'll see if it can pull me away from WoW. I like the concept of an open world game that has a ton of depth, but Ididn't really like the first 3D GTA because I don't like driving games and the parts that weren't driving suffered from horrible controls. |

USA Today wrote: 'Grand Theft Auto IV' is exhilarating adventure
Let's cut right to the chase: Grand Theft Auto IV is not a video game for kids, tweens or even young teenagers. As with its controversial predecessors, the latest in the 70 million unit-selling series is a Mature-rated adventure, created for players 17 years of age and older as it gives you a virtual taste of the criminal underworld. Think of it as an interactive episode of The Sopranos, if you will. Because of its tremendous following and the fact it's available on both high-definition consoles, the Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony PlayStation 3, Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto IV will likely be the best-selling game of 2008. It also helps that it's the first game in the series to offer online multiplayer modes. Having spent the better part of 10 days living this dangerous alternate life, rest assured this GTA sequel more than lives up to the hype. In Grand Theft Auto IV, you play as Niko Bellic, a tough-looking character who arrives in the U.S. from somewhere in Eastern Europe, expecting the streets to be paved with gold. It seems Niko's American cousin, Roman, lied about his extravagant lifestyle: Instead of being wealthy and living in a mansion, Roman is indebted to loan sharks and lives in a cockroach-infested apartment the size of a walk-in closet. Nevertheless, Niko decides to help Roman with his rundown cabstand and keep thugs off his back until he can figure out how to make money and connections in Liberty City, the same city as 2001's Grand Theft Auto III, modeled after New York City and New Jersey. If you're questioning how Niko could forgive his scheming cousin, you'll discover a few hours into the game that there are other reasons why Niko left his homeland. Grand Theft Auto games offer "sandbox" play, meaning you can virtually go anywhere and do anything in this fully realized 3-D city with pedestrians, traffic and storefronts. This play from a third-person perspective includes carjacking any vehicle, listening to more than a hundred songs on car radios and playing minigames such as billiards, darts, bowling or arcade games. Niko can go on dates, swim, surf the Internet and buy clothing and weapons. But it's the seedy missions that unravel the lengthy single-player story. In person or via his cellphone, Niko will be asked to perform missions that include escorting someone, taking out drug dealers, evading police cruisers, racing to one end of the city before someone else, flying a helicopter, retrieving stolen money or looking up an informant's address. In many cases you'll have three offers at once and will be forced to make decisions, which will affect the storyline and your friendships. Grand Theft Auto IV offers high-definition graphics that trump 2004's Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, including impressive lip-synching, non-interactive story sequences that were motion-captured for added realism, varying weather and a new physics engine that models everything authentically. This sequel also adds more hand-to-hand combat and optional in-car GPS to help you better navigate the city. Without question, though, the biggest new feature is something gamers have been asking about for years: multiplayer modes. In Grand Theft Auto IV, up to 16 gamers can play online in a host of cooperative and competitive games including "Deathmatch" (every person for himself), "Team Deathmatch" and "Cops & Crooks" (a racing game). Because we reviewed the game before launch, however, this online component was disabled. Xbox 360 gamers will also be able to download bonus missions and other content later this year, via the Xbox Live service. Controversy is unavoidable with this game. As with past GTA titles you can shoot at cops, drive into pedestrians and request "services" from a prostitute. This sequel is also laced with foul language, plus you can drink and drive and watch pole dancers at a strip club. Again, take heed to the "M" rating. Aside from a slightly choppy frame rate at times, when the action stutters a bit, and hard-to-read green GPS directions on your map, there is little to complain about with Grand Theft Auto IV. Adult gamers will find a single-player story that can easily last a month, not to mention the ability to hop online and play with friends anywhere, anytime. Expect a lot of bang for your buck in this highly polished sequel. |

Just hopped into GTA last night for a brief period after our WoW time. Pretty much just watched the opening cut scene, met the cousin, watched a couple of the in game TV ads (hilarious btw), then headed out on the town to wander around. Jacked the first car I saw, can't recall the name, and found its handling was quite sluggish. Then again, I did read that it is more realiztic than previous GTA games and you should actually use the brakes or order to make turns. Compared to me always just making turns full speed and handbraking in previous versions. Will take time to get use to. Mowed down a couple innocent pedestrians as a result of my inability to take some turns. Da well, LC is not a safe place to be in the first place. Poor suckers. Encoutered a cop walking his beat. Apparently he was having a bad day and proceeded to proposition poor Nikko into finding a nice secluded spot for some alone time. Well, this eastern European was gonna have none of that kind of American hospitality so I attacked him. Perhaps that was a mistake since I had not tried out the combat controls yet and it wasn't until this morning that my wife heard something that killing cops was made a LOT tougher in this version. Needless to say I landed a few punches before the cop pulled out his gun and went to town. Rez at the hospital. That incident put a chip on Nikko's shoulder for the rest of the night and he became a bad boy. Mugged a couple walking by, including one dude who accused me of making him drop his grocery bag. Bastard swore at me so I used that to learn the combat controls (for my next encounter with the cops). Proceeded to beat him senselessand noticed he dropped some cash. Yoink, money in my pocket now. But then what did I find? Why a bus coach liner. Man those things can take a beating and can plow through anything as I discovered driving down the wrong side of the road on the freeway. The best was when the ambulance arrived to take care of the wounded, so I jacked that and drove down the sidewalks just off the nearest off-ramp. All this a mere 15 minutes into the game, not completing one quest, and not even having any sort of weapon yet. Can't wait to get back in to quest a bit to get me a bat/gun, and of course find some of LC's finer strip clubs ![]() |

Here is what I understand to have changed: - graphics - obviously they are now in HD. Very pretty to look at, though I have always been one to consider gfx secondary to great gameplay. - story and character development - while I have not played far enough to fully experience this yet, every review i have read notes that the story, dialogue, and charaters are top notch. I really enjoyed the first intro cut scene and how it began to introduce nuances into Niko's character. - the living city - Now I know, GTA games have always been about the free roaming, do what you want to do, kind of gameplay in a big city. From what I have seen just by dicking around for 20 minutes, IV raises the bar for attention to detail, even from San Andreas, tenfold. I had read the reviews that praised all the detail but I was still "yeah whatever", but once in game, I truly appreciated the efforts. - combat - they have implemented a cover system that supposedly adds a big dimension in not just standing in the open with the person with the biggest gun winning the fight. Again, I have not experienced this first hand yet so cannot comment how well it works, but do note that it is a feature they have added. - relationships - I understand that while not critical to keep your friends happy by hanging out with them (going for drinks, or playing various mini-games (bowling, pool, etc.)) in order to progress the story, the character development that aspect brings is pretty cool. The added bonus of cheap cabs, guns, added muscle when needed, etc. as a result of strong relationships with these people adds to the gameplay. That's what I perceive changing from prior versions of the series. The core missions and gameplay is similar (steal whatever car you want, kill who you want, try and get away from increasing levels of cops, etc.), but I believe the whole package is brought together so much better in a living and dynamic environment. I don't want to come accross as a big GTA fanboy but if you have a 360/PS3, this is a MUST buy title IMO. If you have access to prior versions of the game, it may not be reason alone to get a new console, but you would be delaying playing a stellar title until next year (or more) when it ports to PC as Rockstar has done with previous titles. |

I like the game a lot. The story plays out a bit like an episode of the Sopranos. I'm about 12 hours into it (I have a connection that got me the game a couple of days early). I hope to check out the multiplayer with any of you guys this weekend. I wasn't really excited about the game before it came out, and I didn't really get into GTA3 (only played the liberty city one for about 1 hour or so), but I've really been drawn into the story and the characters. A few things that I noticed 1 - The driving is much easier for me than it was in the last game. I hate driving games, but this driving has been a lot of fun. Probably because it's not always about racing and trying to beat times. Motorcycles are a bitch. 2 - The shooting controls are annoying at first, but once you get the hang of it they aren't as bad as they seem at first. I really enjoy the new cover system. 3 - The AI can be really stupid, this is probably due to the vast amout of things going on at once, but still. I had an "moderately important" ally get hit by a bus and I didn't know what to do, so I quit and restarted the game rather than take the chance that he's dead forever. Which leads me the the next point... 4 - the in-box documentation, while creative and immersive is woefully un-informative. When my ally died I had to restart because I couldn't find any info in the box about that situation. (this was before anyone had the game so I couldn't check online easily) 5 - Early on I shot a grounded helicopter piolet in the head with a sniper rifle and the entire helicopter immediately exploded... very strange. I suppose I wasn't supposed to be able to jack the heli yet, but the whole experience was odd. 6- No loading screens once the game starts and very very few scenery pop in problems that I've noticed so far. 7 - This is one of the first games that I've played that I really feel deserves the M rating. I think Halo is fine for normal, well adjusted 12 year old kids, but this game is not. At least in my (non-parent) opinion. I think it's up to parents to make that decision, but from my experience with teenagers, I'd make sure that I had a long talk about gaming/right and wrong/women/sex/drugs with my <17 year old before I let em play this one. Those are some of my impressions. I'm not a GTA fanboy, but I feel like the game is well worth the price for the singleplayer alone. It did take me awhile to get used to being a bad guy. I still save lives where possible. Anyone else hear if the PS3 rumors about bad installs were true? My 360 version has been fine. |

I expect to be able to play this weekend Mads. Would love to try out some MP with ya. You thinking Fri/Sat night? As for that mission where your ally died, my hunch is that it wouldn't be permanent so restart wouldn't be necessary, but would be pretty cool if it was. Wanna create a new save file get him killed again, and report back? ![]() As for the PS3 problems, the guy at Futureshop where I bought the game noted to a guy in the other line who was buying the PS3 version if he had the 60GB hard drive. Sounded like it was a certain size of hard drive PS3 unit that was causing the problems. Coulda been the 60, coulda been the 120. I was with someone else at the time so wasn't trying to overhear that conversation too much. |

Brief take on multiplayer.... We played Cops and Robbers for a bit last night until we got fed up with the game disconnecting and dropping and not being very cooperative in general. The game-play in the multiplayer is fun, but they've got some kinks to work out in the user-friendly connectivity department. They really should take some notes from Call of Duty 4, which incidentally we all ended up migrating back to after the aforementioned fed-upped-ness. |

After our CoD4 time I hooked up with another bud to try GTA. We did one of the co-op missions and things ran ok. Trying to get both of us into one of the larger games was problematic still, though we did play one game of helicopter racing. Was quite fun. |
