I don't know if any of you have seen any info about this or not but I just came across this yesterday. Evidently, this is a new book from the notes of JRR himself put together by his son Christopher. For those that read the Silmarillion much of this story is already known but one can hope that much more of the story will be fleshed out. I must say I'm very excited about it. The story of Turin Turambar was by far my favorite part of the Silmarillion. I'm not really a lover of tragic stories like this but it has always stuck with me. Maybe because that in most of the LOTR/Middle Earth tales good vs evil is so black and white and this story has lots of grey. Luckily for me I have a business trip next week so I'm sure I'll have done by next weekend and will post my review. It's being released on the 17th. |

Well it was pretty good. Not great and certainly there wasn't a lot of new content but I would recommend it to any Tolkien fan. If you aren't familiar with the story or haven't read The Silmarillion you won't feel that you have missed anything. The Silmarillion is still an awesome read but I can see how it would be daunting to most casual fans. The only bad thing is that it really isn't that long of a book, and I can see how some would say that there isn't too much more content from that already published, but to me it was well worth it. The art work too was nice, but minimal. A couple appendixes that are good, but small. One thing that I took out of the foreward was that this may be the beginning of a few books such as this that flesh out the longer tales of the first age. The Ley of Beren and Luthien and The Fall of Gondolin appear to be the other two that would come. Certainly, Tolkien wrote a lot more on these subjects that ever made publication. The Fall of Gondolin particularly would be interesting as there is very little of this covered anywhere else. |
