I just saw it last night. and I must say, "WOW." It was incredibly great. If you liked the LoTR films, you'll love Eragon. Now I'm not comparing the stories or Tolkein's writings, so you fanatics can simmer down.  I'm speaking strictly of the films here. I've not even read the Eragon books, but I plan to now that I loved the movie. Anybody else see it?

I found it very average fantasy, pretty unoriginal, and way too rushed, so the continuity is pretty poor and character development weak. Maybe worth renting, but a little disappointing at Japanese theatre prices. |

It was a bit on the average side but I wasnt expecting much and we only went to it for a break from RL at the time. Well worth the money in my opinion for us. |

I thought it was fantastic. It deviates somewhat from the book, but still a great film. I liked it for two main reasons: Jeremy Irons (a fantastic actor) and the dragon! Will definately see again. |

I am halfway through the book now, and almost wishing I'd never started. When you say "deviates" that's a typical British understatement. It's almost not even the same story. But it's an ok book though, I guess. A far cry from Terry Brooks, but it's holding my interest.

Hehe in my opinion almost all movies dont live up to the book. I like the series though it is a easy yet enjoyable read. |

Although you do have to bear in mind that the book was written by a 15 year old boy and the movie was probably written by a seasoned screenplay writer. I personally found that the books rambled a bit and the plot seemed to go off on tangents that didn't really matter too much. I think the author gets more caught up in the "day to day" story rather than the overall plot of the books.
Relating between the book and the movie. If a movie is based on a book, I almost always read the book first. I find that if I do it that way I can appreaicate the book in a manner "untainted" by having seen the movie. Invariably if I see the movie first, as I did on this occasion, I generally prefer that to the version portrayed in the book. Having said that, there is a number of distinct concepts put forward in the two books that I don't really like. It also seems as if a few of these have been lifted straight from a D&D rule book! The concept of the Truename spell is one of these (a concept that I absolutely hate and have yet to see a balanced implementation of). Some of the plot points simply don't match up with concepts put forward elsewhere in the books and when these do occur, little explaination is given for them. Overall the main purpose for reading the books through is to find out information that has been purposely withheld from you, as a reader, earlier in the book. It is a method that I once heard someone describe as a "cheap trick" to keep you reading the whole way through. For an overall evaluation, both Eragon and Eldest are worth reading and are entertaining, but there are points where you wonder what the point of that part of the story is and so require a bit of work to get through. |

And I always read a book first before the movie as well if I can. |
