Well it was pretty good. Not great and certainly there wasn't a lot of new content but I would recommend it to any Tolkien fan.
If you aren't familiar with the story or haven't read The Silmarillion you won't feel that you have missed anything. The Silmarillion is still an awesome read but I can see how it would be daunting to most casual fans.
The only bad thing is that it really isn't that long of a book, and I can see how some would say that there isn't too much more content from that already published, but to me it was well worth it. The art work too was nice, but minimal. A couple appendixes that are good, but small.
One thing that I took out of the foreward was that this may be the beginning of a few books such as this that flesh out the longer tales of the first age. The Ley of Beren and Luthien and The Fall of Gondolin appear to be the other two that would come. Certainly, Tolkien wrote a lot more on these subjects that ever made publication. The Fall of Gondolin particularly would be interesting as there is very little of this covered anywhere else.
